Metadata is loosely defined by many as: "Data about Data". A description of a geo-spatial dataset is often referred to as a metadata record.
Metadata can help the city
planner, the graduate student in geography, or the forest manager find and use geo-spatial
data. The capture of metadata also benefits the primary creator by ensuring that knowledge
of dataset is not to an individual...
International metadata
standards are currently being developed. A metadata standard can be described as a common
set of terms and definitions that describe data.

Various tools are available which can be downloaded for free over the Internet. Examples are: CorpsMet95, MetaMaker, MetaGen32, Spatial Metadata Management System (SMMS) etc. The following page on the FGDC Web Site provides an evaluation of the mostly used tools, conforming to the FGDC Standard - links are also provided to sites where the tools can be downloaded: http://badger.state.wi.us/agencies/wlib/sco/metatool/mtools.htm. MetaLite: is a tool for quick, effective and easy documentation of metadata that conforms to the FGDC Standard. It was developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in association with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The purpose for the development of this tool was to document spatial data sets for use in Geographical Information Systems to improve the sharing of crucial spatial data for the monitoring and management of environmental and geological resources. As such a huge amount of institutions were involved, covering an enormous geographical area, the intention from the outset was to conform to some sort of general acceptable standard in the documentation of this data sets. The capturing tool was thus developed based on the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) standard. Collection of basic metadata, using this service, provides an introduction to, and conformance with the minimum FGDC metadata standard. MetaLite are mostly adequate in situations where organisations intends to document a large number of data sets in a relatively short time Metalite is a stand-alone software package and operates on a Microsoft Access database. It exports metadata records in three formats, namely: .SGML, .HTML, and .TXT. The SGML-files are used to make metadata records available through the internet based search facility (i.e. the SDDF). The Microsoft Access database and the HTML-files may be used for delivery of metadata records through a local Intranet or Local Area Network (LAN). |
